Update from Caring Kids

This year we did a few great projects. In September we made care packages for the disabled veterans at the Bedford VA and donated them through an event called Vettes to Vets. They raised over $30,000 in money and donated items…very cool. In October and November we spent our Sundays making ornaments to send to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan through a local organization called Socks for Soldiers. We made over 100 ornaments, then we went to the sock stuffing event and helped stuff and pack 500 Christmas stockings to go to our troops.

In December we spent our time learning Christmas Carols and baking sugar cookies to bring to a holiday celebration at the Merriman House. We sang with the residents, passed out our cookies, and played balloon toss with them. It was a real treat being able to share holiday cheer with the residents and hearing some of their stories!

In January and February we made Valentines and I passed them out to the veterans that come to the Conway V A to thank them for their service and to spread our love.

In March we spent 4 weeks cleaning out the Mouse Room, getting rid of the broken toys, and organizing the puzzles, books and movies. We also informed Pastor Sean that we had some money left over from a fund raiser and that we would like to use it to paint the walls in the Mouse Room when it is redone.

In April and May we have been learning about our environment and have been fundraising to buy a tree or bush to dedicate to the town offices. We have collection containers at Community Market, Silver Lake Hardware, and the Convenience Store across the street from the hardware store. We have been asked to participate in the veteran’s memorial and dedicate our bush during the ceremony as the selectmen felt this would be the most appropriate way to dedicate a tree. Wow….we’ve had a busy year!! We are planning to have our last Caring Kids meeting on 6/10, and then I am planning a trip to StoryLand with the kids on 6/17 so that they may use their “Busy Bee” StoryLand tickets and just enjoy their friendships together.
